Music Composition Assignment – 9.9.16

1. Your assignment this week is to use the rhythm you composed in class on Friday as the starting point to compose a melody in a call and response/question and answer phrase. Please observe the following criteria:
Use the 8 measures of rhythm you composed on Friday
Major key, you can choose the key
Melody only
First 8 measures is the question, 2nd 8 measures is the answer (See below for links to videos with question and answer phrases). Many phrases end with a V (dominant) chord as the question, and end with a I (tonic) chord as the answer.
Be prepared to play or have your composition played in class on Friday, September 16th. That means you’ll need to practice playing it!

2. If you need notation software, you can find some options below:

MuseScore (free download) https://musescore.org/

Finale Notepad (also a free download) https://www.finalemusic.com/products/finale-notepad/

Sibelius (not free) http://www.avid.com/sibelius

3. Ear training is helpful when working on composing and dictating music. If you would like some extra ear training practice, try listening and notating “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” without looking at a score. Check by playing what you write along with the melody from the video above.

4. Be thinking of some ideas on a free choice composition project for the semester. Essentially, you can write whatever you want as a part of your final project for the semester. We’ll talk about it more in class on Friday the 16th.
