Music Composition Assignment 9.16.16

Music Composition Assignment 9.16.16
1. This week your assignment is to take the melody you wrote for this week and change it to one of the forms of the minor scale. Revise anything in the melody you aren’t currently happy with, such as a stronger question or answer, to make it better if you feel it needs it.

There are three major forms of the minor scale:
Natural minor is just what is in the key signature, no adjustments via accidentals.
Harmonic minor is what is in the key signature except the 7th scale degree is raised by one half step. (For example, in g minor, there is a Bb and Eb in the key signature, and F# will be added using an accidental.)
Melodic minor is different depending on whether the melody is ascending or descending. Ascending the melody is natural minor on scale degrees, 1-5, and then like a major scale for scale degrees5, 6, 7, and tonic. Descending the melody is like natural minor with no added accidentals.

2. If you would like extra ear training practice, listen to and dictate the melody to “Old McDonald” and check your melody against a recording.
