Beginning Band: Oboe Assignment for 9.15.2017
Needed materials:
– Oboe swab (long, thin, usually silk cloth to clean out your instrument)
– Small container for water (pill bottle, old film canister, 1-2 oz. tupperware container)
This Week’s Assignment:
*WORKSHEETS
– Oboe parts worksheet (look over and try to memorize practice sessions 1-3, try to fill out from memory practice session 4 then check for errors, fill out missed answers from memory on practice session 5)
– Begin to fill out the fingering worksheet as you learn the fingerings.
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS BOOK 1
pp. 2-5 (read through text a few times to make sure you understand, then practice all of the playing exercises.)
– Practice with reed only for sound until you’re able to produce a solid sound. Use this video for assistance:
Watch yourself in the mirror as well to check your own embouchure.
– Practice fingerings only on the body of oboe until you’re able to produce a sound consistently. Then add reed and practice blowing and fingerings together.
Practice smart!
Successful practice time:
1. Quiet space
2. All materials present
3. Good Posture
4. Warm up with deep breaths for 1-2 minutes (10 seconds in, 10 seconds out)
Successful music practice:
1. Look for time signature, key signature(s), tempo(s), dynamics, and accidentals.
2. Clap, tap, or buzz rhythm before playing.
3. Silently finger/position through the piece in tempo.
4. Play through the exercise.
5. If you can play through it 4x without a mistake you have mastered it.
