Beginner Band: Percussion 9.22.2017

Practice the exercises on page 7 of the bell side of your Essential Elements band book.  Even though it can be difficult to figure out the notes, avoid writing the notes in.  This can really damage your ability to read music in the future, because you’ll rely on seeing the writing and not actually knowing what the notes are.
Reminders: Some of these exercises contain key signatures.  A key signature appears right after the treble clef sign and right before the time signature.  All it does is tell you which notes are flat or sharp for the whole piece.  For example, in exercise 23 “March Steps”, there’s a flat sign on the notes B and E in the key signature.  This means that, for the whole piece, the notes B and E will actually always be B flat and E flat.  Also, remember that you can read notes faster if you just compare them to each other.  For example, if you figure out that the starting note of exercise 24 is F, then just look at the next note.  It goes down from F by one note, and when notes go down in pitch we go backwards in the alphabet.  So, without even saying the lines and spaces to figure out what that next note is, just go one letter backwards in the alphabet from F.  It’s E, but because of the key signature, it’s actually E flat!
Secret Question: What major key has B flat and E flat in its key signature?
