Theory: Composition Assignments for 11.8.2018
You all did a great job with your large form pieces this past week. This week, we are expanding our listening skills. Your assignment is to choose three pieces and write down at least 16 measures of the melody. After you’ve written what you think it is, check it on a keyboard, and then look up an official score if you can find one. Let me know if you need help finding a score to check. I’ve got lots of resources for that kind of thing.
We also listened to some medieval chant. Below are links to the pieces we listened to, including the 5th movement of Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which uses the medieval Dies Irae theme in a modern way. If you’d like to read more about Berlioz and the admittedly super weird story of Symphonie Fantastique, you can find that info here.
Kyrie Missa De Angelis
Kyrie Orbis Factor from Mass XI
Dies Irae by Thomas of Celano (maybe)
“Witches Sabbath” mvt. 5 from Symphonie Fantastique
My musical happy moment this week is a Brazilian pianist who discovers right at the beginning of her recital that the pedal is malfunctioning. And so she has a little fun while they are bringing in a new piano. Enjoy!
