Intermediate Band: Oboe Assignments for 10.27.2017

Intermediate Band – Oboe

Also look for the general Intermediate Band post from Mr. Dan.

Needed materials:

  • Oboe swab (long, thin, usually silk cloth to clean out your instrument) – I forgot to check. If you have these ignore this.
    ·         Minimum of 2 GOOD reeds
    ·         Tuner (I prefer stand-alone [not smartphone/internet], chromatic tuners. Clip-on are fine.)

This Week’s Assignment:

Continue warming up with Essential Elements pp 30 – end, Especially p. 40 #1-6 – Continue to use these for warm-up/practice fingering facility.
Learn and memorize your scales up to 3# and 3b. Work your chromatic scale in a comfortable range. Add new notes one at a time until each is comfortable and easy to play.

Sight Reading practice: https://www.sightreadingfactory.com/app?instrument=Oboe. Pick your range and set any other preferences, key, time, etc. Do a couple per day to help with your fingerings and sight reading skills.

Rhythm a Week #1-6

Christmas Cameo

Adeste Fidelis

Patriotic Favorites – Battle Hymn of the Republic

Film Favorites – Pirates of the Caribbean

  • For these, focus on style! Articulations, dynamics, intonation, phrasing. See if you can find recordings online to listen to.

Successful practice time:

  1. Quiet space

Successful music practice:

  1. Look for time signature, key signature(s), tempo(s), dynamics, and accidentals.
  2. Clap, tap, or buzz rhythm before playing.
  3. Silently finger/position through the piece in tempo.
  4. Play through the exercise.
  5. If you can play through it 4x without a mistake you have mastered it.
