Music History Assignments for 9.29.2017
Visit the WordPress site for this week’s PowerPoint. This week’s lesson is the “Early Christian Era” (
https://pshpmusichistory.wordpress.com/early-christian-era/) link. If you’ve lost or forgotten the password please text or email me using the contact information on your syllabus.
Things to note:
Be sure to review the PP in its entirety as well as the listening examples. Some things that may appear on the quiz pertain to major characteristics, notable Edicts, the Nicene Creed, and Vocabulary. There will not be questions about the Rome portion of the Ancient Foundations lesson.
Since we again did not get to group discussion, think through these questions. Keep in mind these are YOUR thoughts. Not something we specifically discussed in class or came out of a text. Any of these may or may not appear on the quiz:
Discuss the similarities between the Greek philosophy and the early church fathers’ view of music.
Do you think the political ruler should also be the head of the church (especially if they are Christian?) Why or why not?
Contrast: Do you think that beliefs should be primarily private as the early Romans did? What does our current society believe?
Should the early church leaders have completely destroyed all of the primary sources of ancient Roman music? If they had not, do you believe there would be a greater influence of ancient paganism in our current music today?
Read and discuss the Nicene Creed. (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Nicene-Creed)

Visit the WordPress site for this week’s PowerPoint. This week’s lesson is the “Ancient Foundations” (https://pshpmusichistory.wordpress.com/ancient-foundations/) link. If you’ve lost or forgotten the password please text or email me using the contact information on your syllabus.
Things to note:
Be sure to review the PP through Greece. We will discuss Rome next week, so you don’t need to worry about that just yet. Some things that may appear on the quiz pertain to major characteristics, instruments (I may show a picture and you identify), and Vocabulary.
Watch the YouTube Video embedded in the PP. I think it’s also a separate link in the lesson on the website for your convenience.
Look up images of the Instruments mentioned in the Mesopotamian and Grecian portions of the lesson. It could be beneficial to go ahead and look at the Roman instruments as well, but these will not be on the daily quiz.
Since we did not get to group discussion, think through these questions. Keep in mind these are YOUR thoughts. Not something we specifically discussed in class or came out of a text. Any of these may or may not appear on the quiz:
Compare and contrast how Greeks viewed music to how we view music today.
Do you think that music influences our moral character?
Do you view music as more of a mathematical science or a language? Explain.
Compare and contrast the views that the Ancients held with how music is used in the Bible.
