Theory: Composition Assignment for 1.17.2020

Theory: Composition Assignment for 1.17.2020

Great job on your film music this week. You all used your break very well. I was impressed by how many different types of scores we ended with. That was fun!
This week we’ll be experimenting with odd or unusual time signatures. We listened to a Romanian folk song Ma Luai Luai that is in 8/8, a very different feel from 4/4, even though there are the same number of eighth notes in each measure. Your assignment for this week is to write a composition that uses an unusual meter. You can write something completely original or choose an already published/composed melody and put it into a new time signature. I’d like you to aim for at least 2 minutes for your finished piece.
As I mentioned in class, we’ll be exploring pop or CCM music soon. This will require lyrics, either original, reworked (like a poem that you redo a bit to make it rhyme or match your meter), or choose something else that’s already been written. We’ll talk a bit more about rhyme schemes and some strategies for writing lyrics, so you don’t have to have your lyrics complete by next week. But it would be a good idea to start thinking through some ideas or writing down some thoughts that you can pull from when its time to start working on it.
My musical happy moment this week is a Tiny Desk Concert by YoYo Ma. I have seen him live in concert in Kansas City once, and it was definitely a highlight of my concert-going life! He’s a fantastic performer.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
