Beginner Viola Class from 10.28.16
This week, please continue to practice Essential Elements, Exercises 20, 22, 31, 32, 33, 34, and 36. The last two measures of 34 and all of 36 are pretty difficult, so you might want to give them a little extra practice. Also, please begin practicing Exercises 41, 42, and 43.
Keep working on bow holds! It is very important to play close attention to your bow hold and posture when playing with the bow. For your bow hold, keep your right hand fingers curved (especially the thumb), and keep them as relaxed as possible. There should be a slight gap between your index finger and two middle fingers, and a slight gap between your pinkie and two middle fingers. The pinkie should rest on top of the stick, while the rest of the fingers should curl around the stick. Try to make it look as much like the following pictures as possible!
After practicing your bow hold, please practice Exercise 20 (Good King Wenceslas) with the bow. When you have D string notes, pull your bow across the D string. When you have A string notes, pull your bow across the A string. Be careful not to hit other strings. Remember, you are supposed to alternate between down bows and up bows. Bend your right arm at the elbow and bend your right wrist when you pull the bow across the strings. Try to keep the bow straight! If you have a little trouble getting a good sound, you can try applying a little more pressure to the bow as you use it.
