Beginner Viola Class 10.14.16 – Adam Barker
This week, please practice Essential Elements, Exercises 20, 22, 31, 33, 34, and 36. Remember, the best way to practice each song is to play through it twice. Practice them very slowly the first time, and if there is a measure that gives you trouble, slow it WAY down and practice just that measure a few times before moving on. Play the songs at a normal tempo without stopping the second time.
Just a quick reminder: to play low D, pluck the open D string; to play E, put your 1st finger on the 1st tape on the D string; to play F#, put your 2nd finger on the 2nd tape on the D string; to play G, put your 3rd finger on the 3rd tape on the D string; to play A, pluck the open A string; to play B, put your 1st finger on the 1st tape on the A string; to play C#, put your 2nd finger on the 2nd tape on the A string; and to play high D, put your 3rd finger on the 3rd tape on the A string.
Also, please practice holding your bows this week! It is very important to play close attention to your bow hold and posture when playing with the bow. For your bow hold, keep your right hand fingers curved (especially the thumb), and keep them as relaxed as possible. There should be a slight gap between your index finger and two middle fingers, and a slight gap between your pinkie and two middle fingers. The pinkie should rest on top of the stick, while the rest of the fingers should curl around the stick. Try to make it look as much like the following pictures as possible!
Good work everyone! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Remember, there is no class this week! See you on October 28th!
